In-Person and Online Public Involvement: New Interchange on I-459

In-Person and Online Public Involvement: New Interchange on I-459

Project Overview

Location: Hoover (Jefferson County)

A new interstate interchange is proposed for construction near milepost 9 to provide alternate access to and from I-459 in the vicinity of South Shades Crest Road. Ross Bridge Parkway will be extended as a four-lane divided roadway from SR-150 (John Hawkins Parkway) to I-459 and terminate at the intersection of Brocks Gap Parkway and South Shades Crest Road. Sidewalks will be provided along the length of the extended Ross Bridge Parkway from SR-150 to Brocks Gap Parkway. The ramps for the new I-459 interchange will bridge over the CSXT rail lines. Auxiliary lanes will be added to connect the new interchange to the ramps at Exit 10.

A Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI) is the proposed interchange design. A DDI allows two directions of traffic to temporarily cross to the left side of the roadway and return. High volumes of traffic can maneuver quickly and easily through an intersection without increasing the number of lanes and/or traffic signals.

Right-of-way acquisition, with relocations, and easements will be required for the construction of this project. Construction letting is targeted for the Spring of 2025.

The purpose of this public involvement meeting is to inform the public of the design features for the project. The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) is interested in obtaining input from the people who use this route.
