In-person and Online Public Involvement: Access Management on AL-9 (US-231)

Project Overview

Location: Wetumpka (Elmore County)

The Alabama Department of Transportation is proposing to improve access points along US-231 in Wetumpka, Alabama. The proposed project is split into two phases.

Phase One begins at Old Montgomery Highway and continues along US-231 to East Charles Avenue. This phase will add concrete islands to restrict unsafe turning movements, remove redundant driveways, and add u-turn lanes to provide access to the opposite side of the roadway. No additional right-of-way will be needed to implement this project. This project is proposed to start construction in Summer of 2023.

Phase Two begins at East Charles Avenue and continues along US-231 to South Main Street. This phase will add concrete islands to restrict unsafe turning movements, remove redundant driveways, and add u-turn lanes to provide access to the opposite side of the roadway. No additional right-of-way will be needed to implement this project. The construction date of this project is dependent on funding. If funding allows, then it will go to construction alongside Phase One. Otherwise, Phase Two will not begin construction until Summer of 2025.

The purpose of this public involvement meeting is to inform the public of the design features for the project. ALDOT is interested in obtaining input from the people who use this route.
