The purpose of this project is to replace the aging University Boulevard Bridge with a shorter, wider bridge with longer spans.
This will improve traffic operations and efficiency at the existing interchange with US-82 (McFarland Boulevard) and will also
improve pedestrian connectivity from East to West Tuscaloosa. The replacement bridge will also increase the vertical clearance
on US-82 to accommodate freight traffic.
In order to accommodate both current and future traffic demands, there will an additional left turn lane from University Boulevard
eastbound onto US-82. In addition, there will be other improvements such as shared use facilities, lighting, and signal upgrades.
The bridge replacement will be performed using accelerated bridge construction (ABC). This method of construction allows for a
significant portion of work to be completed with both US-82 and University Boulevard open to traffic. By utilizing this method
of construction, the amount of time to demolish the existing bridge and erect the replacement bridge will be minimized.
The purpose of this public involvement meeting is to inform the public of the design features for the project. The Alabama Department
of Transportation (ALDOT) is interested in obtaining input from the people who use this route.
